Fuel relief is available. Here’s what you need to know.

By April 2, 2026 No Comments

We appreciate that the recent increases in fuel and diesel prices are placing real pressure on many businesses, particularly where transport, logistics or machinery are critical to operations. ATO support measures and Federal Government fuel relief have now been announced.

ATO support measures
The ATO has introduced temporary assistance for businesses impacted by high fuel costs, including:

  • Access to a tailored fuel response payment plan (generally with no upfront payment and longer terms);
  • Remission of interest and penalties where appropriate; and
  • The ability to vary PAYG instalments if taxable income has reduced.
    These measures are available until 30 June 2026, subject to eligibility.

Federal Government fuel relief
The Federal Government has also:

  • Halved the fuel excise on petrol and diesel for three months (a reduction of 26.3 cents per litre);
  • Reduced the heavy vehicle road user charge to zero for the same period; and
  • Deferred the next scheduled increase in that charge by six months.

If fuel costs are affecting your cash flow or ability to meet tax obligations, please reach out to the HTA team. We can review your position and, where appropriate, engage with the ATO on your behalf.
