Thought Bubble: What is cloud technology?

There are many companies that proclaim that their services finally use the cloud, making them safer, easier, and faster. However, they don’t explain precisely what this “cloud technology” is and how it works.

We explain this all in greater detail below.

The short explanation is that the cloud is like a literal nimbus cloud, wherein the raindrops are a multitude of apps and services that can move in any direction the operator desires. Much like actual rain, they could reach the people on the ground or go back to the cloud (with the internet basically representing the water cycle). This means that as long as you are anywhere with a “sky” (read: an internet connection) above your head, you have access to all your stored information, services, and more.

History of Cloud Computing

It all started with the invention of the internet in the 1960s, but it only really caught on in the market in the 1990s as the world wide web and internet browsers were developed and started to garner widespread use. As technology advanced, so did the speed limits of broadband connections, which allowed for even more complex applications to run solely through the internet. From this emerged Application Service Provider companies that would let clients run applications in their computers and servers while still having access in their office desktops. In exchange for a monthly fee, customers no longer had to purchase expensive hardware for every employee.

The technology grew more advanced as more applications were enabled to run via the internet. Soon after, companies offered multiple apps to thousands of employees at once, only needing an internet connection to function. Efficiency was maximised at no loss of any quality whatsoever.

Cloud Computing today

You’d be surprised at the number of uses that cloud technology is offering in today’s global market, with about 15 years of technological advancement to back it up. It covers almost all fields of expertise from medicine, to business, to education and so much more.

To give you an example of how far cloud technology has gone, you can look at our own Cloud Consulting Services. Our accounting consulting services take advantage of the cloud to give customers efficiency and convenience. Here is a list of features that put cloud-powered services a few levels ahead of traditional accounting.

  • These services and applications are accessible from any device with a connection to the internet (which is so widely available today that free WiFi is usually the norm in various establishments).
  • They integrate with your bank and other accounts so all transactions matchup.
  • They allow you to collaborate not only with the HTA Advisory team, but also with your colleagues (should you permit them to do so).
  • Being cloud-powered simplifies billing and management through an easy-to-understand user interface and computer processes.
