Our Client Conversation offers an opportunity for us to present our clients to our readership in a way that shares their passion for what they do.

This month we introduce you to Bohn Studio!

Thank you for taking the time to chat with me today, for those of our readers out there that haven’t heard of Bohn Studio, are you able to tell us a little bit about your business?

Bohn Studio is a design studio that is passionate about developing unique and engaging visual communication solutions with a strong design foundation. Our leadership team all came from larger design agencies – foundation organizations like Clemenger and EmeryStudio. We cut our teeth on iconic brands such as Holden, Victoria Police and Hyatt hotels and industries such as property and healthcare.

Our approach to communications is built on developing thoughtful, clear, confident and intelligent design solutions. Our focus is creating communications to effectively achieve commercial outcomes.

Essentially we build brands across the full media spectrum from print in all its forms; such as stationery, brochures, posters, advertising and annual reports to digital such as; websites, social media and electronic mail. We also work extensively in the built environment developing wayfinding strategies, signage, exhibition design and developing the full program of marketing activity for Property Developments from marketing suites to Sales brochures and collateral.

Within such a competitive market, what sets your business apart from the others?

It is our belief that successful design is not only about creativity, it’s about selling products, communicating effectively about essential services, building businesses, generating revenue and profits.

Our thinking is fueled by investigation. We believe that research and analysis validates existing ideas or provides an informed platform for developing new ones, but what really counts is the quality of the ideas and the design that follows and how those ideas are realised, as stand-out persuasive communications. Creativity is only successful when it achieves commercial outcomes. So for us, the ultimate creative pursuit is results – ROI! One of our objectives is to deliver our clients more than they expect, to surprise in a positive way.

We approach management of projects with a sound understanding of commercial realities. It is about process, project management, planning, budgeting and clear lines of communication. Our reputation is built on delivering what we promise. Our clients trust that we are fully committed in solving their design problems.

It sounds like you take that extra step in getting to know your clients and thinking outside the box, I’m sure this leads to some exciting new concepts for your clients.

You mentioned above that ensuring your clients are generating a profit and revenue is key to your success, what tools and/or strategies have you implemented to ensure your business is profitable and sustainable?

When you are in the business of building brands for other people it can be all too easy to neglect your own. Therefore, from the outset, we have always believed that it is hugely important to spend time on the business of our business. We schedule quarterly directors’ meetings to ensure that we are on target, to flesh out any issues, to forecast workflow, discuss new business opportunities and brainstorm opportunities on how we can diversify our business.

How has working with HTA assisted your business in getting where it is today?

HTA has been with us all the way since the beginning of BohnStudio. From basic accounting and BAS we’re now on Xero which makes our life easier with payroll and super. Planning ahead with Tax plans and budgets has also helped our business with understanding where we are at and ensuring we are managing our finances effectively and taking advantage of Tax minimisation strategies.

Is there anything else you’d like our readers know about Bohn Studio and the work you do?

We are committed to working collaboratively with our clients to meet their communications needs. In particular, we aim to foster relationships with our clients that are built upon shared expectations and understandings regarding the design process and the development of tailored solutions for specific briefs.

We work for a range of industries including: government, health, property, manufacturing and agriculture with a myriad of small start-up businesses.

Recently we’ve been working with Jayco, shifting their brand positioning from ‘the road to freedom’ which was seen as clunky and focused on the tedium of camping and caravanning to the more aspirational, direct and simple – “that’s freedom”. We have also helped the City of Darebin to completely refresh their brand. We developed a comprehensive set of user friendly brand guidelines and included a signage strategy. Ongoing work also includes a bi annual newsletter – The Business Connection which showcases stories, insights and ideas from Darebin’s leading businesses.

Most recently we completed and awareness raising campaign for International Overdose Awareness Day which saw activity on social media lift from less than 2,000 facebook likes to a massive 20,000 (and growing!) in a month.

At the moment we are also in the middle of a marketing campaign for a large scale mixed use property development for the Brady Group. The development will be located at 380 Lonsdale Street. We have been developing the website, a series of sales and marketing brochures and the marketing suite.

ProPlenish – a beauty brand – is another brand we have been involved with since its inception. The brand is growing and the company continues to expand its product range.

Here’s what some of their clients have to say…

Tiffany White; Head of Communication and Marketing at City of Darebin
Bohn are just a delight to work with. They’ve been instrumental in helping me to radically overhaul a tired, 20 year old brand and position us visually as a contemporary and credible organisation. BohnStudio genuinely listened to the problems we were trying to solve and offered invaluable strategic solutions and insight. They’ve been true partners in the journey towards a revitalised brand and I couldn’t have done it without them.

‪David Grant; Communications Officer at Pennington Institute
Encouraging the whole world to remember people lost to overdose and to help destigmatize the issue of overdose death is no easy task. Not only did Bohn Studio take the time to understand the complex issues involved with overdose, the team provided real depth in terms of the design concepts. ‪Thanks in large part to the creative our campaign in 2016 has been a great success with a 95.4 per cent increase in events in 16 countries around the world. Likes on Facebook were up from less than 2,000 to more than 20,000 and we received reach of more than 1.4 million people in one 28 day period.
